The only criticism i would have is that of Planet Rocks website. It might just be my computer but i find it hard to actually get to the listen again feature, and then when i’m there i can’t fast forward and it has a habit of just stopping after a short while, so i have to start all over again. As a result i have only heard a bit of your show, it would be a lot easier if i could just download it but never mind, but what i heard of it was very good. By the way, i wasn’t criticising you, just the website.
Could i just ask, how do you manage to do a radio show at that time of night? I’m not sure i’d be able to stay awake long enough.
Thomas, I think they read the book first and realized it was easier giving him a night gig than a morning one.
Guy, it was much smoother this time around, to be expected with more practice and all. I do kinda wonder who else was in the studio with you, because whenever you were saying something funny and started laughing, I heard someone else laughing as well.
The only other thing that comes to mind is that every time you switch from the mic to the next song or advert, I hear the click of whatever button does that before the song kicks in. Don’t know what kind of gear PR has you using, and it’s been ages since I’ve listened to a traditional radio station (willingly, that is), so I don’t recall if that’s standard or not.
Nix.
(Yes, I /did/ rearrange my work schedule on Fridays so I’d be able to listen to the show instead of being in the middle of the commute home…)
Um, Phoenix you did well to be able to rearrange your work schedule to listen to the show.
I however struggled to get out of bed at 10am Sydney time on Saturday, after getting mildly drunk celebrating my 40th birthday the night before, to listen to the show live. Only to realise when show was over, the website allows you to listen to any show anytime up to 7 days after airing.
Karen, it needed doing for other reasons entirely (mainly I am not a morning person either and work wanted me in later anyway, so it was a happy coincidence). Something like this, I prefer listening to live instead of canned … and given how notorious I am about neglecting to do things immediately (hence why my DVR is always full of telly I haven’t got around to watching), I’d probably forget (shame on me) and miss everything, so this arrangement works out well for me.
And far more importantly, happy belated birthday! I hope you had a great time with all your mates!
Nix.
Hey, Guy. I haven’t yet been able to catch your show live but I’m now happily “listening again” to Friday’s show. Feeling a little “Alice in Wonderland”…how can one listen again when one hasn’t listened to being with? Anyhow, I’m glad that you’re back on the airwaves!!!
The only comment I would make is it would be nice if there were a way for Mac folks to tune in. (Or is there a way and I missed it? That’s always a possibility!)
Kive (that’s “love” with my fingers on the wrong keys),
Becky
Hi Becky!
Yes, you can listen to the show on a mac, you just have to download Windows Media Player for mac, here http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e974157-5031-4ac6-840a-6e07547b6aeb&displaylang=en
Then just download the file and play it there.
Cheers!
Thank you kindly, Ricardo Padua! I’m relatively new to this Mac thing but I’m loving it.
Becky
Ta, very much Phoenix.
Hi,
Just saw there will be a show in London in march, maybe the only oppurtunity for us to be able to enjoy this great performance.
I wonder when the tickets will be on sale, and if there will be tickets for ordinary people like us.We already check planes and we think we’ll make it.
Geneviève, from Brittany
A small question if i could be so bold, Guy. What is your opinion on bootlegging, by this i dont mean people with them cr*ppy phones but minindisc, stereo mic etc. I have a friend (cough) who downloads the odd concert now and again some of which are very good. I see some newer acts, Joe Bonamassa, Dave Matthews actually encourage it.
Hope your stand up shows continue after next months gig!
Thanks
Paul
Genevieve
I will save you tickets if you come!!!!
I like bootlegging, the only alternative is for bands to make albums of every show they ever do!
xxGuy
Thanks, Guy, so I’ll book the plane and accomodation right now !
How I forgot, Guy, I will pay for the tickets, just want to be sure there will still room for us.
I saw on one website that the 5th of March gig is a “farewell gala performance.” But this isn’t the last show that you are doing is it? I also saw on a different website that was selling tickets that said that it was for over 18s only. Is this just something that that one website are doing or is the entire event for adults only? Also, is this true of all performances or is it just because of the venue that this one performance is for adults only?
Sort of linked to the bootlegging question but are there any plans to record a live show and release that in some way?
Final question, and sorry if this is sounding like the spanish inquisition but does the paperback differ in anyway to the hardback in terms of content?
Cheers.
Thomas
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
our chief wepaon is fear and surprise surprise and fear
o nix look what you have me doing . this is as bad as the rotten song that gets stuck on your head and you can’t get rid of it . nothing played on by guy or course !
how are things by the way nix i haven’t heard for you in many the long day !
o the joys of being dyslexic . that should read from you not for you . how come i can;y see my spelling errros until i send in the comment !
Linda, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a Guy-played song stuck in your head. In fact, I’d rather have that than most of the crap on the airwaves now.
I’ll drop you an email sometime soonish. As for not being able to see your comments, there should be a wee preview window below the place you type but above the ‘submit comment’ button. Magic letters appear in it whilst I’m typing now, scary!
Good show again last night, Guy. I must say I approve of your typical playlist. And the amusing commentary when you’re reading through the Poke Pratts or whatnot. It sounds like you’re having fun, which is always the best part of being on-air.
Much obliged, good sir.
Nix.
Decided to listen to your show while at work today and only when you talk was it distracting.
Karen.
For the Australians in the audience,
Coming up on Spicks and Specks – 6 February – 8:30pm – ABC
EPISODE 2
Our special guests this week are bassist extraordinaire Guy Pratt, comedian Dave O’Neil, soul singer Guy Sebastian with comedian & stand-up queen Cal Wilson.
The closing performance will feature one of the best bass players in the world and one of the best bass players in his street, Guy Pratt and Dave O’Neil battle it out in a ‘Bass Off’.
The show is for 18 and overs because of the venue..I do intend to release a dvd at some point.
It’s the last time I’ll be performing this show in London, Although I may write a new one if I can be bothered..
Paperback the same as hardback…
A DVD would be splendiferous!
“The only criticism i would have is that of Planet Rocks website. It might just be my computer but i find it hard to actually get to the listen again feature, and then when i’m there i can’t fast forward and it has a habit of just stopping after a short while, so i have to start all over again.”
First off, sorry for being quite late to the party…I just happened upon this place a day or two (I know, I know…what took this long-time Floydian so long?), and finally got brave enough to post here.
Anyway, count me in as one who too has trouble with the Planet Rock webplayer sometimes. My main problems with it are…
1. Most of the times I’ve paused it for a minute or so (mostly to finish writing commentary for a song in one of my MySpace bloggings about Guy’s show), the show will play for a few seconds to a minute after being started again, and then stop and not start up again!! The two or three times that has happened to me have been highly infuriating, no thanks to…
2. …not being able to rewind or especially fast-forward!! With all due respect to Planet Rock, why does their player feature rewind and fast-forward buttons if you cannot even do that? I wish one could…it would be a lot nicer than having to wait through an hour of show all over again like I did TWICE on the show’s second week. Though, at the same time, I really cannot complain about having to do that, because it gave me the opportunity to hear “This Flight Tonight” and “Back Street Luv” for the second and third time ever in my life (we Americans are so deprived when it comes to awesomely unique classic rock radio… *sighs*).
Other than all of that, at the risk of repeating myself, I love the show…if I didn’t, I would not have been brave enough to send in a ‘Poke Pratt’ query.
Also, I too will be looking forward to the DVD of your “My Bass and Other Animals” show…I have really enjoyed what I have seen of that on the site, Guy.
In closing, fetch…THE COMFY CHAIR!!
No, it doesn’t make a lick of sense, but I just had to get in on the Spanish Inquisition train… >;)
Caroline
Hello Guy,
Your episode of ‘Spicks and Specks’ was aired last night.
I must say you were definitely the star of the show; it was very entertaining, very funny. You seemed to do well with most of the questions, so not knowing the ‘Flowers ‘song is forgiven.
And you seemed to get a fair bit of air time compared to the others, so think you did very well to get a few stories from book in.
Did you enjoy it? You seemed pretty relaxed. I assume you have seen it somehow.
Karen.
A DJ shaved your wife? Was that yours I heard on Howard Stern??
You know you’ve won a bass-off when the other guy has to yank your cable in desperation to stop you from kicking his butt.
Well done indeed.
is there any way of watching the episode online? does the network that shows spicks and specks have an internet player thingy like the bbc has started? what channel/network is spicks and specks shown on? i don’t think it’s ever been shown in england has it?
I too would love to see this Spicks and Specks episode, be it through an online player or a copy of sorts. Especially that ‘bass-off’ after what Phoenix said…
- Caroline
Unfortunately the network that airs ‘Spicks and Specks’ – ABC Australia does not appear to have an internet access play back.

Hi Guy,
Thank you sir, a very nice website, I see some names I’m familiar with in the blog.
Any plans for another visit to the Edinburgh Festival in 2008?
I’m the father of the 7 year old boy who you got your photo taken with at the Brixton Ritzy last September. Nice one mate, thanks again for your time.
Received your book from Amazon at the weekend, cheers.
Hey, I remember you, Alex!
Nice to ‘see’ you again.
I did a quick backtrack over previous blogs and saw your Xmas video message. I remember you from both nights in London.
Guy signed your book and wee Alex took your photo. Nice to see you again too!
Read the first 15 chapters of “My bass …” last night. Good so far, will post again after I’ve read it all.
So, the news about Planet Rock’s going around… such a shame. Most people are talking in terms of it being a done deal that it’ll go away, but I wonder if there’s any real hope they’ll secure a new buyer.
If not, I will certainly miss your show, Guy. It’s been a real treat getting to listen to you. If my station could afford you (and you wouldn’t totally destroy our admittedly amateur-level bandwidth), I’d ask them if they’d give you a timeslot.
(And for our random comment of the day for no reason at all: Michèle! Il neige ici encore!)
Nix.
Oh, wow…I had no idea about Planet Rock until I came over here and then went to over to PR’s site and caught the news on the front page.
I really hate that, and not just ’cause of Guy’s show, but also, Planet Rock is easily the best classic rock station I’ve happened upon in sometime. I particularly love the fact that they play huge favorites of mine that you hardly ever hear here in the States, like Hawkwind and Budgie, to name a couple.
Between this and my coming down with the flu, it has not been a good day.
- Caroline
Planet Rock…..Rocks?. I have listened for a number of years I thought it was THE rock station, it is my Ipod on the Air waves, Sad news.
however i still keep missing Guys shows, i will put that right this week end. Guy can you play a request for…ALL PLANET ROCK LISTENERS
Planet Rock might still be saved if they can find a buyer, aparently Brian May has asked if he can buy it!
Yeah Guy, a humdinger of a book, thoroughly enjoyed it. Laughed my arse off at the Tokyo-Heathrow flight which took me down my own memory lane regarding a close friend of mine. haha
Read it over 2 nights. Good stuff. If only you had been 80 years old, I’d still be reading it
I look forward to seeing you headlining your own show for the first time soon, wherever that may be?
A great CV, you’re one of the most talented bass guitarists on the planet mate.
Next time you’re in Scotland and looking for night out, gimme a……………………… on second thoughts, better not as I’ve got kids now, and dont think I could keep up with you either.
If possible can I request an appropriate track on Planet Rock tonight?
Beer drinkers and Hellraisers by ZZ Top (or Motorhead).
Cheers
Guy, i finally managed to catch your show on Planet rock excellent just the sort of show to varnish my dining room floor by!
i could n’t sleep so i got up & decided to get it out the way (the varnishing, not your show) the only trouble being i had to keep reminding myself the rest of the household was asleep, the volume slowly increased throughout the show & buy the end of your show i was wide awake & i had painted myself into a corner in the kitchen just as your show had finished so i had to sit on the floor in the kitchen literaly watching paint dry, luckily it was quick drying but i lost momentum i & found my head nodding as i struggled to keep awake. Next week its painting the fences by moonlight!!
